Cost to Move a 2-Bedroom Apartment in the DMV

The price range

Most local two-bedroom moves in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia cost $880 to $1,650 as a flat rate. The number is set in writing before move day and does not change if the job runs long. It covers the following.

• The truck, fuel, and travel time
• Furniture wrapping and pads
• Floor and doorway protection
• Taking apart and putting back standard furniture, including both beds
• TV and mirror protection
• Stairs, long carries, and elevator time that we knew about when we quoted

Crew, truck, and time

A two-bedroom is usually a two or three person crew and a 15 to 20 foot truck, depending on how full the apartment is. Plan on five to seven hours including the drive.

A typical two-bedroom is 50 to 80 boxes plus two bedrooms of furniture, a living room, and often a desk or a dining set. A third mover does not always raise the flat rate, and on a job this size the extra hands shorten the day.

Three example moves

These examples are illustrations. Your quote comes from your own photos and addresses.

Lower end. A couple's two-bedroom with one room used as an office, 50 boxes, and furniture that is mostly flat-pack. Both buildings have elevators and docks, and the move is midweek. Two movers finish in about five hours.

Middle. A furnished two-bedroom with 65 boxes, two beds, a sectional, a dining table, and two desks. One end is a third-floor walk-up with street parking. Three movers take about six hours.

Upper end. A full two-bedroom with 80 boxes, a storage unit's worth of extras, and several large fragile pieces. Both buildings are high-rises with shared elevators, and the move is on the last Saturday of the month. Three movers take about seven hours.

What raises the price

The same seven things matter at every size, and a two-bedroom has more of each.

• Stairs, priced into the quote at about $28 a flight
• A long walk from the truck
• Shared or slow elevators
• Fragile and heavy pieces
• Loose items that are not boxed
• Weekend, end-of-month, and same-day timing
• A storage unit, basement cage, or balcony that was left off the photos

How to keep it at the low end

A two-bedroom has more to go wrong, so the preparation matters more.

• Start packing three weeks out, and finish two days before.
• Send photos of every room, plus closets, the balcony, and any storage space.
• Reserve the freight elevator and the dock or curb space at both ends.
• Take apart the beds and desks yourself if you want to save the most time.
• Label every box with the room it goes to at the new place.
• Choose a midweek, mid-month date if you can.
• Get rid of furniture you do not want before the quote. Our crews can haul it away on the same visit.

What you pay and when

The payment terms are the same on every move.

• $100 holds your date and comes off your final bill.
• If we have to cancel, you get the $100 back in full. If you cancel, it is not refunded.
• The balance is due on move day.
• Card and PayPal payments made online carry a 4.2% digital transaction fee.
