• Rockville is an incorporated city with its own government, and it is the Montgomery County seat.
• The Red Line stops at Rockville and Twinbrook, with Shady Grove just to the north. MARC's Brunswick Line stops at Rockville station.
• Rockville Pike and I-270 carry most of the traffic, and both back up at rush hour.
• Public schools are part of Montgomery County Public Schools.

Where people live

Rockville Town Center is apartments and condos near Metro, with reserved loading bays and elevators. King Farm is townhomes and apartments on a street grid, with rear alleys and shared garages. Twinbrook, Fallsmead, West End, and College Gardens are single-family neighborhoods with driveways.

Three-level townhomes are common. Every heavy piece travels a flight or two, and the top-floor landing is usually where a sectional has to come apart.

Step 1: Ask for the building or HOA rules

Apartment and condo buildings usually want a reserved elevator or loading bay and a certificate of insurance. Townhome communities often have HOA rules about where a truck can sit and for how long. Ask for both in writing when you sign.

Step 2: Reserve street space with the city

If the truck has to park on a city street, Rockville will post temporary no-parking signs for a move.

• Submit the city's online request form at least five business days ahead.
• Residents, renters, and property managers can all request signs.
• The form asks for the address, the dates and times, and how much curb you need, from 15 to 50 feet.
• Standard hours are 8am to 5pm.
• The Parking Enforcement Unit contacts you to confirm the request and handles placing the signs.
• Questions go to the unit at 240-314-8920, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Alleys, garages, and driveways

In King Farm, the rear alley and the garage decide where a truck can stop, so tell us which side your unit loads from. On single-family streets a clear driveway is usually all that is needed. Move your own cars to the street the night before.

Step 3: Set up utilities (two weeks before)

Start each service the day before you move in.

• Water and sewer: the City of Rockville serves part of the city and WSSC Water serves the rest. Ask your landlord or seller which one bills your address.
• Trash, recycling, and yard waste: the city collects weekly from single-family homes and most townhouses. Apartments and condos use the building's service.
• Bulk items are collected by appointment through the city.
• Internet: Verizon Fios and Xfinity. Ask the building which are wired in.

Step 4: Your first 60 days

Maryland gives new residents 60 days for licenses and vehicles.

• Get a Maryland driver's license from the MVA.
• Title and register your vehicle, with a Maryland safety inspection certificate.
• License your pets through the City of Rockville. City residents do not use the county's licensing.
• If your street has permit parking, apply to the city for a residential permit.
• Register to vote and file a USPS change of address.

A four-week plan
