Moving Near a DC-Area University: GW, Georgetown, AU and UMD

Campus moves are small loads with tricky access and fixed dates. Most take under two hours once the truck is in place. This guide covers dorm rules, off-campus apartments, summer storage, and what to send us for a price.

What a student move costs

Studio and dorm moves start at $195, and most small moves in DC, Montgomery County, and Arlington land between $195 and $495 as a flat rate. Stairs, the distance from the truck to the door, and the number of pieces set where you fall.

  • Verified students get 10% off during move-in and move-out weeks. Text a photo of your school ID with your quote request.
  • There is no three or four hour minimum on small moves.
  • A single dorm room usually takes 90 minutes to two hours from start to finish within DC.

Step 1: Check your housing office's rules

Every university sets its own move-in and move-out windows, and outside trucks are often limited to certain times and places. Find these four things on the housing website before you book a crew.

  • Your assigned move-in or move-out slot, if the school uses them
  • Where vehicles can stop to load, and for how long
  • Whether the hall has carts, and whether the elevator is shared
  • The deadline to be out, which is often tied to your last exam

Step 2: Tell us about the access

Access shapes the price more than the number of boxes. Send these along with your list.

  • The hall or building name and your floor
  • Whether there is an elevator
  • Where a truck can legally stop
  • Your time slot, if the school gave you one
  • Anything that needs to come apart, such as a lofted bed or a desk

Off-campus apartments

Foggy Bottom, Glover Park, Burleith, Tenleytown, Brookland, and College Park are full of walk-ups and older buildings with no loading dock. On DC streets, a DDOT permit with signs posted 72 hours ahead holds the curb for the truck. Without one the crew parks wherever is legal, which can mean a long carry on a block full of student cars.

Group houses add one more thing to plan. Agree with your housemates on which shared furniture is leaving and with whom, and write it down before move day.

Summer storage

If you are leaving for the summer, we can pick up from your dorm or apartment, take everything to a storage unit, and bring it to your new place in the fall. All three legs can go in one flat quote.

  • Reserve the storage unit before finals, since units near campus go quickly at the end of the semester.
  • A 5 by 5 unit holds a dorm room. A 5 by 10 holds a studio.
  • Label every box with your name and what is in it. In August you will not remember.
  • Take home anything you need over the summer before pickup day.

Packing for a small move

Small moves go fast when everything is boxed.

  • Box everything that fits in a box, including desk drawers and bathroom supplies.
  • Leave clothes on hangers and cover them with a trash bag.
  • Take apart the bed and the desk if you assembled them, and bag the hardware.
  • Defrost and dry the mini fridge the night before.
  • Keep your laptop, documents, and medication with you.

Booking

Move-in and move-out weeks are the busiest days of the year around campus, so book as soon as you know your slot. Parents can book for a student. Text us from either phone and we will coordinate with whoever is on site. We move students at GW, Georgetown, Howard, American, Catholic, UDC, George Mason, and Maryland.
