How Much to Tip Movers in the DMV

There are two common ways to work it out. Either one is fine.
- Per mover: $20 to $40 each for a half day, and $40 to $80 each for a full day.
- By percentage: roughly 10% to 15% of the total for exceptional work, split across the crew.
Worked examples
These use the per-mover amounts above.
- A one-bedroom with two movers, about four hours: $40 to $80 in total.
- A one-bedroom with three movers, about four hours: $60 to $120 in total.
- A two-bedroom with three movers, a full day: $120 to $240 in total.
When people tip more
The top of the range usually goes to crews who had a harder day than the job looked on paper.
- A third or fourth floor walk-up
- Heat, rain, or snow
- Heavy or awkward pieces
- A lot of fragile items wrapped with care
- A problem solved on the spot, such as a sofa that would not fit
How to hand it over
Cash works, and so does adding a tip online.
